New Source Markets Boost Tourism

By Mathias Ringa

NAIROBI, Kenya, January 03, 2012 (Buziness Africa) - Hotels at the Coast are enjoying roaring business with the influx of tourists from non-traditional source markets of Eastern Europe and Scandinavia.

Last December, chartered airlines from Europe to Mombasa were a record 37, up from 29 in 2010 bolstered by new visitors from Poland, Russia, Sweden, Finland and Denmark.

Chartered flights from Italy rose to five last month from four in 2010 with the return of Alitalia.

Mombasa and Coast Tourist Association (MCTA) chairman Mohamed Hersi said tourism was experiencing a boom, thanks to the holidaymakers from non-traditional markets.

Travel advisories

Arrivals from Eastern Europe and Scandinavia, he said, had cushioned the industry from the effects of travel advisories by Western countries in October last year.

Mr Hersi said hotels in the North Coast and South Coast were still busy though the Christmas and New Year season had ended.

He said the hotels were full during Christmas and New Year and now had occupancies of between 70 and 90 per cent.

"Despite the end of the festive season, we are still busy because of arrivals from emerging markets of Eastern Europe and Scandinavia," he said.

Mr Hersi, who is also the Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort general manager, said hotels in the North Coast are expected to have an average occupancy of 70 per cent up to March. He also projected that hotels will be packed during Easter.

In the South Coast, Baobab Beach Resort director Bimal Thaker said the hotel was full over Christmas and New Year and current occupancy was 90 per cent.

"Our hotel is relatively busy from this month up to March following the surge in tourist arrivals from non-traditional source markets," he said.

"We expect the industry to only get better as more chartered flights come in from Europe," he said.

Severin Sea Lodge sales manager James Owiti said the hotel has 98 per cent bed occupancy due to arrivals from both traditional source markets of Germany and emerging ones like Sweden, Finland and Denmark.

He said between this month and March, the hotel expected to average between 70 and 90 per cent bed occupancy.

Kenya Association of HotelKeepers and Caterers (KAHC) Coast branch chairman Titus Kangangi said hotels in Malindi and Watamu were bursting at the seams in the festive season.

"Tourism in Malindi and Watamu improved over Christmas and New Year due to tourist arrivals from Italy as well as the locals," he said. "The industry is still vibrant, buoyed by holidaymakers from Italy. Hotel bed occupancies are expected to average between 50 and 70 per cent up to March," he said.

Moi International Airport Manager Yatich Kangugo said a South African airline is expected to start flights from Johannesburg to Mombasa.

An increase in airlines

Moi International Airport Mombasa has weathered the power problems to handle an increase in airlines operating in 2011. According to Kenya Tourism Board, the increase has played a major role in boosting tourist arrivals which stood at 1,039,852 total arrivals by air and sea from January to October, with arrivals through airports accounting for over 90 per cent of this.

"We are doing tremendously well, as flights have increased this year raising our expectations of more tourists than recorded last year," said MIAM manager Yatich Kangugo. "Although Western countries imposed travel advisories two months ago due to security fears in the Lamu archipelago, we have more tourists arriving from Eastern Europe and Scandinavia."

Finnair a charter flight from Finland resumed operations into Kenya through the airport. On board the flight were 268 tourists. Apart from Finnish tourists, Finnair is also key in bringing in tourists from Scandinavian countries like Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

These countries are part of the new markets identified by Kenyan Tourism Board in the diversification strategy by the government unveiled in 2008. Novair from Norway also recently launched flights as well as new airline Tui Nordic operating between Stockholm, Copenhagen and Mombasa.

Alitalia and Fritidresor Danis airline, from Italy and Denmark also started operations into MIAM recently bringing with them more than 500 tourists. Kangugo said numbers of passengers using the airport is expected to rise to 1.5 million up from the 1.4 million in 2011. About 1.1 million tourists visited Kenya in 2010 compared to 952,481 in 2009. The industry earned the country Sh73.4 billion in 2010, up from Sh62 billion in 2009. (END)
