Kenya: Russian-Language Website For Tourism

By Lucas Barasa

NAIROBI, Kenya, June 29 (Daily Nation) — Kenya will launch a destination marketing website in the Russian language to reach potential tourists among the 140 million population Russians.

Russia is being targeted by many countries as the new tourists' source market.

The launch is part of the ongoing Source Market Diversification Programme that begun this month and is currently underway in the emerging markets of Eastern Europe comprising Russia, Czech Republic and Poland.

The website will be linked to the www.magicalkenya.com which is Kenya's destination marketing medium. This is aimed at breaking the language barrier which has been a major drawback in marketing Kenya in non English speaking eastern European countries.

In a meeting between Kenyan and Russian tourism delegation led by Ministers Najib Balala and his Russian counterpart Anatoly Yarochkin held in Moscow on Sunday, the two agreed to take more active roles in tourism promotion activities taking place in both countries.

A statement from the Ministry of Tourism public relations officer Mwangi Gakunga, said for the next two months Kenya will use Sh16 million for promotional activities including billboards, printing and distribution of Russia language brochures before the website is set up.

Kenya has previously not been marketed in the Russian market compared to other destinations like Dominican Republic, Cuba and Egypt which are very well marketed in Eastern Europe.

"The government of Kenya should invest much more towards the promotion of the various and unique products for Kenya," said the Russian Minister. He promised that the Tourist agency in Russia will work with the Kenya Tourist Board to promote Kenya in his vast country.

Minister Balala outlined the measures that Kenya government has put in place such as the opening of marketing developments office in Moscow, tax incentives for investors in tourism, reduction of visa fees from 50USD to 25USD and scrapping of the same for children under 16 years in order to encourage family travel.

Meanwhile, two leading tourism promotion agencies in Russia Capital Tour and VKO Travel have expressed interest in marketing Kenya following the establishment of a tourism marketing development office in Moscow.

In a consultative meeting with Kenya delegation, the two companies with a combined network of 140 offices in Russia and the Confederation of Independent States (CIS) promised to work with the newly appointed Kenya Marketing Development agents Aviareps to consider developing a joint marketing proposal that would be co-funded between Kenya Tourism Board especially in direct consumer advertising.

Capital Tour which is a Russian multi tour operator that organizes citizens of Russia abroad and receive foreign tourist in the CIS countries. It is one of the largest multi tour operator in the mass market of Russia offering a wide range of group and individual packages. It is represented in about 39 regional offices and a wide network of about 7,000 travel agencies in Russia, CIS and Baltic states.

The VKO Travel has over 100 offices across Russia and their annual volume averages US$ 208 million. They provide services to over 160 million clients and their main destinations are Spain, Greece, Bulgaria and Croatia. Kenya hopes to tap into the two companies expansive networks.

Minister Balala later hosted a reception for over 50 travel trade representatives in Moscow before leaving for the second leg of the trip in Czech Republic.(END/2009)
