Sudan: The Russian Foreign Minister in Khartoum

KHARTOUM, Sudan, December 03, 2014 (SUNA) -- The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, arrived here on Wednesday for participation in meetings of the second session of the Russian-Arab Forum which opened here.

Lavrov met President Omar al-Beshir and held joint press conference with his Sudanese counter-part Ali Ahmed Karti.

Earlier, the Russian Presidential envoy and Deputy Foreign Minister, Mikhail Bogdanov, arrived in Khartoum for participation in the two-day Forum which consists of two tracks- a meeting to be addressed by the Sudanese and Russian Foreign ministers, the Secretary-General of the Arab League and the Arab Foreign ministers, and an Arab-Russian economic conference to discuss boosting economic cooperation between the Arab countries and the Russian Federation and establishment of economic partnerships of the Arab-Russian private sectors.

The Forum will also discuss issues of common interest and coordination between the two sides in the international fora.

The Sudanese and Russian sides will hold bilateral talks to be co-chaired by Karti and Lavrov with the Sudanese side also to consist of the ministers of Finance and Minerals, the Governor of the Bank of Sudan and senior Foreign Ministry officials. Besides Lavrov, the Russian side will be made up of Mikhail Bogdanov and a number of other officials.

The spokesman of the Sudanese Foreign Ministry, Dr. Yusuf Kordofani, said the leaderships of the two countries possess a political will for enhancement of the bilateral relations in all spheres to make of them an example to be followed. He commended the role being played by Russia in the region and its positive contribution to numerous causes. The spokesman pointed to the importance of Russia as an economic and industrial power.

The visiting Russian Minister stated that the joint Sudanese-Russian Ministerial Committee would meet in the Russian capital Moscow on December 10 to stress the strategic bilateral relations in all fields.

The Sudan representative in the Cairo-based Arab League, Ambassador Abdul Mahmoud Abdul Halim, told Sudan News Agency (SUNA) that the Russian-Arab Forum, which includes all member states in the Arab League, is convened in the context of the Arab League objectives of widening partnerships with the major global powers, including the Russian Federation.

Two preparatory meetings were held on Tuesday- one of them was for coordination by representatives of the Arab countries and the second meeting comprised senior officials of the Sudanese and Russian Foreign ministries and the Arab League General Secretariat. The outcome of the two meetings will make up a draft closing communique to be approved by the Forum. The draft communique reflects the visions of the two sides on the international and regional questions.

Abdul Halim said the coordinating meeting discussed the draft communique which will be submitted to the ministers. It includes political, economic and diplomatic topics connected with the Arab-Russian cooperation, with emphasis on Russian-Arab partnerships for maintenance of the international peace and security and global legitimacy, he said.

The communique also provides for rejection of Israeli plans for making Palestine a homeland for Jews, in addition to making reference to the situation in Yemen, Syria and Libya, finding a settlement to the Palestinian cause and cooperation for resolving conflicts in the region, said Abdul Halim. He indicated that the Russian Federation and the Arab League are in agreement for resolving those issues.

The Russian Ambassador to Khartoum, Mirgayas Shirinsky, told SUNA that the visit by the Russian Foreign Minister would be his third meeting with his Sudanese counterpart. He indicated that there are continued contacts by the two countries for coordination of positions and viewpoints on international and regional issues and other issues of common interest.

In addition, there is a joint high ministerial committee of the foreign ministries of the two countries that holds regular and periodical meetings, the Russian Ambassador said. (SUNA)
