Russia Renews Interest In Africa’s Energy Sector

NEW YORK, March 30, 2015 (AfkInsider) -- Away from the scenes of a crisis-torn Russian economy, biting sanctions and a currency crisis, Moscow is busy firming its grip on Africa’s lucrative energy sector. In just six months, Russia has bagged three mega energy deals across Africa – fueling talk of a potential counter to the dominance by the West and other emerging economies such as India and China.

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, March 27, 2015 (AP) — Ethiopia's planned new airport on the outskirts of the capital is still years from becoming a reality but Tewodros Dawit can already envision how grand it will look.

"The airport we are planning to build is going to be huge. Very huge," Tewodros said one recent afternoon as he examined project plans in his office in Addis Ababa. "It will be one of the biggest airports in the world. I don't know what other countries are planning in this regard for the future but no country has created this much capacity so far in Africa."

MOSCOW, March 23, 2015 (Buziness Africa) -- Russia and South Africa diplomatic relations have developed steadily since both established full diplomatic relations on February 28, 1992 after Soviet collapse. Russia has an embassy in Pretoria and a consulate-general in Cape Town, South Africa. And South Africa has an embassy in Moscow. The Declaration on Strategic Partnership signed between the two countries sets forth long term benchmarks for bilateral coordination in trade, investment, the humanitarian sector and the international arena.

Private investors pile into Africa

LAGOS, Nigeria, March 18, 2015 (CNBC) — Africa, once off the radar of many investors, continues to rise as a destination for private equity firms. PE funds invested $8.1 billion in African companies over 2014, the second highest total ever after the $8.3 billion in 2007, according to new data from the African Private Equity and Venture Capital Association.

"The record levels of 2014 show that PE continues to attract local and foreign institutional investors looking to diversify their portfolios," AVCA head of research Dorothy Kelso said in an email.
