Surfing Russia’s Military Cooperation With Angola

Maks1By Kester Kenn Klomegah*

MOSCOW, October 31, 2013 (Buziness Africa) -- As Russia plans to increase its presence on the African continent’s weapons market with the latest military agreement to supply Angola with highly powerful military equipment such as Su-30K fighter jets, build an ammunition plant and provide maintenance services estimated at $1 billion, experts have raised several questions among them whether Russia is rearming Africa at the expense of development and helping to accumulate debts replicable of Soviet times.

China's Dream, Kenya's Dream

By H.E. President Uhuru Kenyatta

CHINA, October 30, 2013 (Buziness Africa) -- Just like the scale of its spectacular success today, the magnitude of China's challenges only three decades ago was similarly great. The strategies that enabled it achieve success offer special lessons. I have a deep appreciation of the leadership philosophy you espouse both for China and internationally. It reflects your nation's proud tradition of diligence, courage and wisdom, and underscores your stated intention to promote world peace and stability through development of individual countries. I agree that international fairness must be secured through a strategy of equality, democracy and inclusiveness at all times, through all global conditions.

Nigeria: Kingsley Moghalu's Emerging Africa

BY FEMI ARIBISALA,

NIGERIA, OCTOBER 29, 2013 (The Vanguard) -- The title of Kingsley Moghalu's new book, "Emerging Africa," is puzzling. Rather than being an affirmation of its title, Moghalu's book begs the question: "Is Africa really emerging?"

Moghalu is suitably skeptical of conventional wisdom. He rejects popular Western thinking in days of old which derided Africa as the Dark Continent; with the cover story of The Economist proclaiming it "The Hopeless Continent."

Africa’s Economic Growth Prospects

By Calestous Juma*

LONDON, October 28, 2013 (PR Newswire) -- Africa’s economic growth outlook has come into sharp focus recently. Some analysts have argued that claims about “Africa Rising” are a myth. Others argue that Africa’s growth is underestimated. These contrasting views, however, pay little attention to major trends that are shaping the continent: deepening regional integration; shifting trade relations; and the rise of technocratic presidencies.

Five Reasons Why MoUs Ineffective?

ACCRA, Ghana, October 27, 2013 (Buziness Africa) -- A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in general terms is an agreement between two or more parties who have the desire of cooperating to reach common goals which would be beneficial to either of the parties involved. In international relations, MOUs are not binding on any of the parties and cannot be enforced by any UN organ. Therefore, it takes only commitment and purpose to fulfill them and surely, they are mostly fulfilled due to the benefits that each party stands to gain.

Russian Investment Needs Credit Support

MonumentCathedralBy Kester Kenn Klomegah*

MOSCOW, October 25, 2013 (Buziness Africa) -- Over the past few years Russian companies have shown an increasing interest towards investment and preparedness to compete with other foreign players in Africa, but they have also complained bitterly of lack of state financial support and investment credit guarantees from policy banks and money-lending institutions. China, India and Japan, and more recently the United States have provided funds to support companies ready to carry out projects in various sectors in African countries.
